About Her

Hello, my name is Jamila and I am Her.

The idea for SheSoundsLikeHer.com came to me while I was writing my first book of poetry with the same name.

Growing up, I constantly felt the pressure to be like other girls, blend in, and not cause a scene, because nothing about me should be overtly special. And as I grew into my womanhood, I realized that belief I'd been holding on to about myself for so long, was far from true. Nothing is more magical than standing out and being uniquely who I am meant to be.

Girl, but here's the catch! Once you finally realize that individuality is what we all are striving for, then you start to understand why the idea of blending in isn't so bad.

We all share similar experiences, and we all know what it's like to feel like Her and be silenced.

So yes, I am Jamila Wright. I went to school at the University of Miami (Go Canes!) and I studied Motion Picture Screenwriting, Music Business and Creative Writing. I played the saxophone in band for over half my life, and I am a serious movie and R&B nerd. But despite all of my uniqueness, I'm no more special than you.

I am Her, and so are you.
