New Music: Selah Marley - Breathe
Lil Miss Selah Marley is all grown up and it's time y'all hear what she has to say!
The heir to Miss Lauryn Hill's throne recently released her debut single, "Breathe" and it's a modern take on what it means to be a young woman in 2017. On the track she sings about not letting a bad relationship get her down, because she knows exactly who she is.
"So just know that I have grown but you need to watch the throne," Selah sings."'Cause all these sticks and stones, they will never break my bones/ I'm so sorry but I'm gone, I have never felt so strong."
"Breathe" sounds equal parts young, fresh, and honest because it is the result of a dorm room recording session the 19-year-old had with her friends, producer, KPR, and rapper, IDKHIM, after a conversation that started at an NYU student panel discussion.
In an interview with W Magazine, the young songstress explained why this track was so important to her.
“Essentially, that song for me is me standing up for myself–or more standing up to myself,” she said. “Because it’s clear I’m talking about some guy, some love interest that I’m not dealing with anymore, that I’m over it. We’ve been going back and forth all this time, I was chasing you, and now I’m done. After so much heartache, you’ve decided to come back into my life, and it’s basically saying, ‘Listen, boy…’ It’s me going from a very hypersensitive emotional state to indifference.”
Though Lil Miss Marley is currently making waves in the fashion industry by modeling for the likes of Chanel, Rag & Bone, Ivy Park and Yeezy, she's proving that she definitely can carve out her own lane in music as well.
