Review: The Last Time I'll Write About You x Dawn Lanuza
Do you remember what it felt like the first time you fell in love?
Maybe you can, or maybe you can't, but Dawn Lanuza definitely paints a realistic picture of love in her book 'The Last Time I'll Write About You.'
The short poetry book takes us on a journey from beginning to end of how she fell in love, and how she finally learned how to let go. And as you read her work from start to finish, you'll smile, cry, and maybe even laugh a little.
Lanuza's book is separated into six sections titled, "The First.," "The Pull.," "The Kiss.," "The Talk.," "The Hurt.," and "The Last." Each section represents a different victory and trial during the time she spent with her first love and stands alone as mini stories of their own. But by the time you get to the end, you come to terms with the fact that all good stories MUST end in order for you to move forward and start a new one.
"If I could love you this much
for this long
-- And on my first try --
Then surely,
I could love someone else more
Far better,
Far longer."
Critique wise, this book of poetry is nothing short of honest, which is what's truly best about Dawn's work. But, there are moments when I was hoping there'd be more. More details. More metaphors. More story in her poems. I just wanted her to give me a little extra something that made the poems more personal and less like they were meant for an audience to read.
Also, I do wish that the book was a bit longer, because by the last poem, I didn't want the story to end... but maybe that's the point. Even when you don't want to let go, you have to learn to say that final goodbye.
In order to grow, you have to be able to move on, and this young poet proved that she's a lot stronger than many of us think we are.
