Review: Soft Thorns x Bridgett Devoue

Bridgett Devoue is an honest soul with a giant heart.

After reading through her debut book of poetry Soft Thorns, I couldn't help but take a sigh of relief. This beautiful piece of art is vulnerable, and dark, and happy, and truthful, and personal... but most of all, this piece of work is real-- and relatable.

Coming in at 193 pages, Bridgett's introduction to the world is full of feels. And as you take the journey from the very first page to the end, you can feel her energy radiating through each and every word. Whether she's talking about love, lust, depression, growth, or womanhood, she speaks on each topic with such ease and admiration.

The book is separated into five sections. They're titled "bleed," "love," "scar," "learn," and "heal." With each section, we get a glimpse into the life of someone who's pain turned into words that I can't get out of my head. Devoue turned the simple task of living into a manifesto of what it means to feel, and feel deeply.

"we choose to stay numb because
we think it keeps us safe
but the most dangerous thing
we can do is to forget how to feel"

The only criticism I have of Soft Thorns is that I wish the poems had titles, but I guess without them, the book reads like both poetry and pages torn out of her diary. And when you think of it in that way, it's hard to not respect that that decision.
